Beginning Mac Programming: Develop with Objective-C and Cocoa (Pragmatic Programmers)

Great Price "Beginning Mac Programming: Develop with Objective-C and Cocoa (Pragmatic Programmers)" for $19.98 Today

I have been developing web sites for many years. I have worked with HTML, XHTML, CSS, Flash, PHP, MySQL and none of that prepared me for learning how to do iPhone development.

I searched far and wide and read any number of reviews and recommendations. I have looked at a number of highly recommended books on iPhone Development, but not until I began reading this book did any of it make sense. If you have never done Objective-C or Cocoa programming before and you want to learn programming for the iPhone or the Mac, this is the book to start with. Tim Isted has taken the time to carefully explain in real-world terminology how Objective-C works.

To some, this book may seem like a diversion because it actually starts with programming Mac applications and only gets to iPhone App development at the end, however, it is the time the Tim has taken to explain the fundamentals and framework that makes everything else make sense. If you want to learn iPhone or Mac Development and you don't have a background in C or Objective-C programming, this book is for you.

Thank you Tim for recognizing that there are people who want to do iPhone/Mac development but need to place to begin learning.

Four main objectives for the future of chemical and process engineering mainly concerned by the science and technologies of new materials production [An article from: Chemical Engineering Journal] Overviews

This digital document is a journal article from Chemical Engineering Journal, published by Elsevier in 2005. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
Today the chemical and process engineering especially involving chemical reactor engineering has to answer to the changing needs of the chemical and related process industries such as petroleum, petrochemical, bituminous, pharmaceutical and health, agro and food, environment, iron and steel, building materials, paints, glass, surfactants, electronics, cosmetic and perfume, etc., and to meet market demands. So being a key to survival in globalisation of trade and competition, the evolution of chemical engineering is thus necessary. And to satisfy both, the market requirements for specific end-use properties of the products manufactured in (bio)chemical reactors and the social and the resource-saving and environmental constraints of the industrial-scale processes and technologies, it is shown that a necessary progress is coming via a multidisciplinary and time and length multiscale approach. In such a frame the future for the science and technologies of new materials can be summarized by four main objectives: (1) a total multiscale control of the process (or the procedure) to increase selectivity and productivity, i.e., nanotailoring of materials with controlled structure; (2) a design of novel equipment based on scientific principles and new operation modes and methods of production: process intensification; (3) product design and engineering: manufacturing end-use properties with a special emphasis on complex fluids and solids technology; (4) an implementation of the multiscale and multidisciplinary computational chemical engineering modelling and simulation to real-life situations: from the molecule to the overall complex production scale into the entire production site. Moreover, chemical and process engineering will also be increasingly involved and concerned with the application of life cycle assessment to new material design and production and its use but also to the plant and the equipment together with the associated services.

iPhone SDK Application Development: Building Applications for the AppStore

Great Price "iPhone SDK Application Development: Building Applications for the AppStore" for $19.97 Today

While this book is not as comprehensive as some have wanted, I found it to be a nice beginners tutorial to writing iPhone applications. The book starts out with an objective-C primer. Since objective-C has such an "interesting" syntax this is badly needed, even though I come from a strong programming background.

Each section includes a reasonably complex sample that puts that section's material to use. Most of the sections also include a "Further Study" area that gives you some homework. This is where the user can expand his knowledge through research and working with the tools.

The book jumps around a bit by first going over simple UI patterns, then spending time talking about audio services and networking, only to come back and spend more time with UI controls, only to jump back into audio/video. Still, one has to remember that this is a reference book and not a novel so jumping around is ok.

The sample applications that I have tried so far are ok and I feel like I have a much better grasp on how the iPhone system works.

This book is not an XCode or Interface Builder tutorial.

good for advanced users - K. Addaquay - New York
i am surprised by some of the reviews this book is getting. personally..i think is WONDERFUL book...BUT not for beginners. i think if you already have a handle on things, this book can REALLY push your understanding to another limit. if you want to be held by the hand..step by step then please dont get this book, i totally understand where the other reviewers are coming from( YOU DONT BUILD APPS WITH INTERFACE BUILDING IN THIS BOOK ... everything is from scratch 100% code ). ...this book is a MIRACLE.

objective not subjective - J. Rawlings - Melbourne, VIC, Australia
Whats with all the complaining about how the api's and device capabilites SHOULD be??? who cares, keep your opinions to forums and blogs, no one wants to read about this who is starting out. Leaves a bad taste in your mouth as soon as you start reading.. asked myself the question, why is this guy even writing about the topic if he's so annoyed with the constraints?! Forget it, too frustrating to make any constructive progress.

iPad Programming Overviews

Hold an iPad in your hands and you'll know what the fuss is all about. Select an app and the device disappears as you find yourself immersed in the experience--the iPad defines a new category for devices. iPad Programming shows you how to build apps for the iPad that people will love to use.

This quick-start guide will have you writing iPad apps right away using a combination of the familiar iPhone APIs along with the new APIs and additional templates designed specifically for creating iPad applications.

The iPad has a display that's more than seven times as big as the iPhone. The metaphors are different; the application design is different. Users will be able to interact with your iPad app in new ways. In this book you'll learn to take advantage or the additional real estate and functionality.

Every time you turn around it seems as if there's another ten thousand apps added to the App Store for the iPhone. If you're building iPad-specific apps, it's a brand new day with plenty of opportunity. In this book we don't just teach you to write apps that run on an iPad, we teach you to create apps that delight users because they wouldn't make sense running on any other device.

Not Great - Bobo - Dallas, TX
I have gotten through the first 7 chapters of this book. I am going to switch to something else. I just feel like it is taking so long to actually accomplish anything. And from looking some of the intro videos from Apple, the author seems to be going the long way around the barn for everything. Here is what I want from an development book.

1) Outline the structure of what you are going to do
2) Fill in the appropriate code with explanations
3) Run the code

- Then repeat this process with expansions and improvements.

Here is the format of this book

1) Blab on forever about concepts, inserting lame jokes
2) Code things without explanation, just saying, we will explain why later
3) Go back and try to explain things after it is coded
4) Randomly switch topics like a stream of consciousness. Oh, why don't we stop here and worry about an icon....

I did not realize how bad I had it until I watched an apple developer conference video where the speaker demonstrated the power of Cocoa and Interface Builder to put together an application in an hour that does more than what I have gotten so far out of 7 chapters.

I just don't trust that this author is really sharing from his vast understanding of the best way to get things done.

Not the correct style/content for a development book - Manuel A. Ricart - Cottage Grove, MN United States
The content of the book is basic and is OK as an introduction, however there are a few things I don't like about this book:

1) Some key steps are usually missing or not highlighted enough. For example, in order to dismiss the keyboard on the "ReturnToMe" application, there's a very important setting that needs to be made in Interface Builder, without it, it doesn't work. This part is missing.

2) The code samples are fairly crude code. Instead of using a single value to determine something, additional instance variables are created. Not elegant, and worse not reusable. In this case, the sample code was to scroll a text field to account for the keyboard showing/hiding. Similarly values like phone numbers are stored multiple times in the code. A more elegant solution is to simply store the value on the UI where its shown, and to read it from the button/label when necessary.

3) Presentation of code samples sometimes direct the reader to "insert the after this text" type of thing. I understand the need to save space. However when right next to this I find screenshots of XCode that are useless for any purpose (like adding accessor methods), the logic doesn't hold. Scrap the picture and list the code, as this is always more useful to the reader.

4) While there's a lot of text to try and motivate development of useful apps, the sample apps spend time on useless minutia and skip important tips. For example a bit of effort goes into developing a 'hidden button' to what amounts to setting a preference for the application. The space would be better served by showing how to set an application preference. Other details like customizing the keyboard that will show when the user taps on a field is more useful and directly affects the usability of the application for the user. The sample doesn't do what the text preaches.

5) A cool feature on the ReturnToMe application is enabling the user to dial the number. However the way this was implemented is silly. Instead of providing a pointer to the API to dial a phone, the phone number is placed in a UIWebView (to get the feature for free). The code to this is 100X more than calling the API directly. - [[UIApplication sharedApplication] openURL:[NSURL [..]]. And yes, I want to see how to use the UIWebView, but that usecase is the wrong place for it.

After the initial application, the book jumps into a larger application. I find larger samples to be less useful to the reader than small recipe type snippets that cover API ground. While a complex app is cool, it should simply be a downloadable sample for readers to examine.

The iPhone Developer's Cookbook: Building Applications with the iPhone SDK

Great Price "The iPhone Developer's Cookbook: Building Applications with the iPhone SDK" for $19.00 Today

Every other iphone book out there sticks to teaching the use of Interface Builder everytime you work on the GUI side of you app. That's totally insane.

I bought this book, made it 4 chapters in and thought I wasted my money. I bought another book and a couple months in realized that all I learned was interface builder and how to make the most basic apps possible. I've gone back to this book and realized it was the only one I needed.

Do not waste your time with making interface builder apps unless you are not a programmer or you are just looking to make a simple app over the weekend and probably never publish it.

This book separates the real programmers from the people who pickup an IDE and think they can code because they can drag and drop GUI components.

I would rather not have any books than not have this book. I would recommend buying it with the Learning Objective c book (from the same publisher) if you are new to the language. I find that it is not as simple to pickup as C++, Java or C# because the syntax is sort of odd. The learning objective c book will help with that.

If you are a good programmer, are new to iphone development, are capable of making really good software and want to create complex apps, this is the only book you will need.

If you are not a programmer (either literally or just think you are a programmer but really are not), are new to iphone and have never written software (on your own without using Google to find all your source code), go get one of the other books that teach drag and drop interface building, you will be lost with this book.

Customer Review

Definitely NOT helpful for new iPhone developers. - software developer -
This book is very frustrating, and an immense disappointment. Despite my 40 years of software development on other platforms, this book is woefully inadequate at helping someone new to iPhone development. Unclear documentation, poorly laid out source code (Ms. Sadun admits that it's done this way for ease of book publishing, not for the user of the book). Downloading the code itself is an exercise in frustration, requiring that you set up other tools (without any documentation) just to be able to download. If you bother to compile the examples, every one has the same name, so you are left with a mess to separate and cleanup, both on your mac and on the iPhone. The author gives you a website if you have any questions, but totally fails to answer a single question or provide any help whatsoever.

Perhaps if you are already a very experienced iPhone developer you can gain some useful kernels of wisdom from this book, but otherwise it's useless. Stay away!
